Communications Internship
Responsibilities:
Outreach for the Grassroots Leadership College:
- Share the stories of remarkable local leaders with the community at large
- Raise awareness of the need for leadership training
- Work with neighborhood and community wide media outlets to inform the public about our programs and the accomplishments of current students and alumni
Specific task areas are listed below:
Recruitment/Retention:
- Maintain ongoing communication with participants and alumni through electronic and paper newsletters and collecting of alumni stories
- Promote the GLC and the work of our alumni by actively working to get alumni stories in local media outlets
Public Relations:
- Develop and distribute the “Grassroots Leader” newsletter via mail and website
- Work with area media at the neighborhood and community level to publicize the activities and accomplishments of the GLC and its graduates
Administration:
- Track and maintain files on media coverage of the College and our alumni
- Other administrative duties as necessary
Experience and Skills Needed:
- Demonstrated Skills/Abilities Requirements: Proven skill in communicating verbally and in writing with diverse individuals, strong people skills, and competency with personal computers are all required. Necessary computer skills include proficiency with word-processing and graphic design software. The intern should also have interest in or experience writing media releases, working with the media, and doing basic newsletter and brochure design.
- Education/Training Requirements: Relevant coursework in public relations, journalism, and/or communication, volunteer or professional experience in one or more of these areas is a plus.
